The history of the Jeep company dates back to the 40s of the last century. From the first days of its existence, the company positioned itself as a manufacturer of compact off-road vehicles, the hallmarks of which were simplicity, reliability and high off-road qualities. The most iconic Jeep cars are the Cherokee and Wrangler, which began production in 1973 and 1986, respectively, and continues to this day.

In 2006, the company officially unveiled its new model, the Jeep Patriot, which sits between the compact Jeep Compass and the larger Jeep Cherokee. Serial production of the model began in 2007, and already in 2011 Jeep made a minor update, affecting the technical component and the interior of the SUV, which by that time was noticeably lagging behind its Japanese and Korean competitors.

In 2014, the car received another restyling, as a result of which the Jeep Patriot received a slightly corrected appearance, improved finishing materials and new engines.

It is curious that in Russia Jeep Patriot is presented under the name Liberty (Freedom), since by the time the car entered the Russian market the name “Patriot” was assigned to the domestic carmaker UAZ.

Exterior Jeep Patriot

Jeep Patriot is a classic "jeep", in the exterior of which the features of the legendary Willys and Wrangler are clearly visible. In place are the proprietary false radiator grille, represented by seven vertical slots, and round headlights, thanks to which the car is identified literally at a glance.

The car looks impressive and is perceived to be much larger than it actually is. The main difference between the 2014 model and the 2011 model is a slightly different location of the fog lights, which are now closer to the center of the front bumper, and not along its edges, as it was before.

Large wheel arches, large front and rear doors, and a large glass area are striking when looking at the profile of the SUV. The stern of the Patriot is devoid of any design excesses and is represented by a huge tailgate and rectangular vertical marker lights. Special attention should be paid to the large mugs of side mirrors and functional moldings located on the roof, allowing you to transport bulky cargo, which, for one reason or another, could not be placed in the trunk.

The Jeep Patriot is a mid-size crossover, as evidenced by its dimensions:

  • Length - 4.424 m;
  • Width - 1.808 m;
  • Height - 1,667 m.


The ground clearance of 205 mm allows the car to feel confident even on difficult off-road conditions. True, the picture is somewhat spoiled by the massive lip of the front bumper, which noticeably reduces the crossover's geometric cross-country ability.

Jeep Patriot is the most affordable car in the company's model range, but even despite this, the car is in minimal demand on the Russian market, which is surprising, since the car is literally created for domestic roads.

Patriot interior

The first generation Jeep Patriot received a lot of criticism due to its clumsy interior design, which was dominated by hard plastic. However, it should be noted that despite its "hardness", the plastic was highly resistant to scratches, which is extremely important for a car, the element of which is off-road and dirt.

After the Chrysler company, which owned the Jeep brand, was bought out by the carmaker Fiat, the Italians first took up the design and decoration of the interior.


Despite the fact that hard plastic was still used in the cabin, the car's interior has become more modern and stylish due to the use of textured plastic in different shades, as well as stylish chrome elements.

The instrument panel has become more attractive, although the overall style and color of the instrument lighting remain the same.

The car received a new, more modern three-spoke steering wheel with the ability to control the multimedia system. The center console has also been transformed, where a large color display of the entertainment and information complex and a stylish climate control unit in the cabin have been registered. On the right side of the dashboard there are two glove compartments, where A4 sheet can easily fit.

The front row seats are large with barely perceptible lateral support and a small number of adjustments, but even despite this, a person of almost any size can easily sit behind the wheel of the crossover.

The second row of seats can easily accommodate three adult passengers, while there will be more than enough free space in length, width and height.

The car can easily pretend to be an expeditionary or tourist car, which is facilitated by a sufficiently large luggage compartment - the trunk volume is 537 liters, which exceeds the volume of the older model - Cherokee. If necessary, the trunk can be increased by folding the backs of the second row of seats, as a result of which you can get 1357 liters of free space and an almost perfectly flat floor.

Previously, the Jeep Patriot, like its "brother in the shop" Compass, was based on the GS / JS platform, which was the result of cooperation between Daimler Chrysler and Mitsubishi Motors, and the updated Patriot received a slightly modified trolley, which received the JX index and was used on such models like Mitsubishi Outlander, Citroen C4 C-Crosser and Dodge Avenger.

The car is endowed with almost easy handling and good ride smoothness, which was achieved thanks to the reconfiguration of the suspension and steering. On the Russian market, the car is presented exclusively in an all-wheel drive modification, which in normal driving mode directs up to 95% of the torque to the front axle, and in the event of slipping of the front wheels, 60% of the torque can be transferred to the rear axle. Additionally, the car is ready to boast of the presence of a modified braking system, a downshift mode and an intelligent downhill assist system.

Russian buyers are offered a choice of two power units, which can be aggregated with a 6-level manual transmission or a continuously variable variator:

  1. 2-liter 140-horsepower diesel engine developing a maximum 186 km / h and accelerating from 0 to 100 km / h in 10.6 seconds. The fuel consumption of this engine in the combined cycle varies between 6.6-7.9 l / 100 km, which is a good indicator for a car of this class.
  2. 2.4-liter engine developing 172 hp. and consumes about 9.7 l / 100 km. The maximum speed of a gasoline vehicle is 201 km / h, while the car needs 9.6 seconds to accelerate to the first hundred.


In general, the car behaves confidently both on the highway and on country terrain, where the family traits of a true Jeep are fully revealed. The car easily copes with medium and large irregularities, as well as diagonal hanging, before which the lion's share of competitors, such as Ford Kuga, KIA Sportage, Hyundai ix35 and others, pass.

Safety

Compared to its predecessor, the updated Jeep Patriot received significant improvements in terms of passive and active safety, which was facilitated by an increase in body rigidity, the use of stronger grades of steel, as well as an expanded list of electronic systems, including:

  • Anti-lock braking system with the function of recognition of loose coating;
  • Stabilization and exchange rate stability system;
  • Assistant when descending from a slope;
  • Parktronic;
  • Rear View Camera;
  • The system responsible for the rational distribution of braking forces;
  • Traction Control System (TCS);
  • Intelligent torque distribution system;
  • A pair of front airbags (side airbags are optionally available), etc.


Moreover, like any modern car, the Patriot is equipped with three-point seat belts, as well as ISOFIX child seat mounts, allowing you to treat the car as a family car.

At the time of the release, the price of the Jeep Patriot, depending on the modification and level of equipment, varied within the range of 16-22 thousand dollars (976 thousand - 1.3 million rubles). Already in the basic equipment, the car offered the following list of equipment:

Summing up, it is worth noting that the 2014 Jeep Patriot is a pretty good car, captivating with its brutal appearance, roomy interior, good cross-country ability and rich equipment, which is available for quite adequate money. And if not for a number of minor oversights, the crossover could well have received the title of the most interesting and functional car in the SUV class.
